What Is the Scheme?

Pakistan’s pink salt — mined in Punjab — is famous worldwide, but most of the profit has gone to foreign companies that process, brand and resell it. This scheme changes that: the Punjab government is financing local businesses to do the value addition themselves — processing, branding, packaging and marketing pink salt products under Pakistani brands for global markets.

“Pink salt is Pakistan’s uniqueness,” the chief minister said at the launch, noting that Pakistan supplied the mineral and the labour while other countries captured the value through processing and branding.

Key Features

  • Interest-free loans from Rs 5 million to Rs 50 million per business — the government pays the interest (Rs 1.456 billion set aside for this).
  • 110-acre Pink Salt Processing Zone established in Quaidabad as a specialised industrial cluster for 200 value-addition units.
  • 10,000+ employment opportunities expected from the new units.
  • Support for young entrepreneurs and startups, with facilitation to access global markets.
  • A model retail outlet set up to promote pink salt processing, branding, packaging and marketing.

How to Apply — Step by Step

Applications are submitted online only through the Mines and Minerals Department’s dedicated portal:

  1. Open pinksalt.punjab.gov.pk on your phone or computer.
  2. Read the “About Program / Eligibility Criteria” section on the portal carefully.
  3. Register and fill the online application in your own name, with your own CNIC.
  4. Provide your business details — the loans cover salt processing, grinding, refining, cleaning and packaging units, plus purchase of machinery, equipment and export-standard technology.
  5. Note your application number and keep a copy of everything you submit.
  6. Deal only with the Mines and Minerals Department — never pay any private agent. No official application fee has been announced, so be wary of anyone asking for money to “get the loan approved.”

Who Can Benefit?

The scheme targets businesses and new investors working (or planning to work) in pink salt processing, packaging, branding and export. Young entrepreneurs and startups are specifically encouraged. The processing zone will also house a Business Facilitation Centre — a one-window support office for investors — plus a Model Retail Outlet for marketing.

Why It Matters

Value addition, branding and development of pink salt products could increase Pakistan’s annual exports by up to $300 million, according to the official briefing. Instead of exporting raw salt cheaply, Pakistan will sell finished, branded products — keeping the profit at home.
